Conference Overview

Leading district energy practitioners from across North America assembled in Vancouver, B.C., Dec. 7-10, 2015, for IDEA’s evolvingENERGY conference – Canada’s premier forum for the district energy and combined heat and power industries. This was the second year that IDEA held an evolvingENERGY event, with last year’s conference taking place in Toronto, Ont. The 2015 conference had a distinctly global atmosphere featuring international representatives from the International Energy Agency (IEA) Implementing Agreement on District Heating and Cooling including Combined Heat and Power. These representatives offered timely insights on technology innovations, industry R&D, best practices and emerging policies to accelerate district energy deployment for more resilient and sustainable cities.

Following welcome remarks from IDEA Chair Bruce Ander of Markham District Energy, the conference began with several panels featuring global industry leaders:

IEA Global Experts Panel District Energy: A Local Perspective
Pathways from Paris: Initiatives, Technologies and Policies Accelerating District Energy Deployment in Canada: An International Roundtable

The Technical Program featured more than 20 presentations covering subjects including:

Business Models and Financing Campus Energy
Combined Heat and Power Community Energy
Construction and Comissioning District Cooling
District Energy in Cities International Perspectives
Metering and Controls Microgrids
Sustainability and Renewables

IEA Global Experts Panel

Representatives from Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Korea, Norway, Sweden and the UK shared presentations on district energy industry trends, emerging policies, technologies and best practices driving district energy growth and innovation in their respective countries, such as Germany's 70/70 strategy and Danish Climate and Energy Policy. This panel featured practical, proven examples of district energy as an urban sustainability strategy from Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London, Stockholm and Seoul.

Invited reresentatives included:

  • Canada: Ken Church, Team Leader - Communities, Natural Resources Canada
  • Denmark: Lars Gullev, Managing Director, VEKS
  • Finland: Antti Kohopaa, Adviser, Finnish Energy Industries
  • Germany: Heiko Huther, Head of R&D, AGFW
  • Korea: Bongkyun Seo, Finance Director, Korea District Heating Corporation
  • Norway: Heidi Juhler, Director, Norwegian District Heating Association
  • Sweden: Ase Myringer, Research Area Director, Energiforsk
  • United Kingdom: Robin Wiltshire, Technical Director, Building Research Establishment
  • United States: Rob Thornton, President and CEO, IDEA

District Energy: A Local Perspective

Distinguished industry executives from North America share their views on market momentum and new competitive forces. Ho do local, state or provincial policies drive deployment? How are business models shifting? What are customers expecting from district energy service?

Invited industry executive included:

  • Michael Ahern, Senior Vice President, System Development, Ever-Green Energy
  • Bruce Ander, President and CEO, Markham District Energy
  • Stacey Bernier, President and CEO, Creative Energy
  • Patrick Bohan, Director, District Energy and Combined Heat & Power, ENMAX
  • Stan Gent, President and CEO, Enwave Seattle
  • Jim Lodge, Vice President, Alternative Energy Solutions, NRG Energy

Pathways from Paris: Initiatives, Technologies and Policies

The UNEP District Energy in Cities Initiative cites district energy as crtical to cutting emissions and achieving a low carbon urban economy. IDEA industry leaders share "front-line experience" on deployment of innovative district energy technologies and emerging policies needed to de-carbonize cities and de-risk district energy investment. IDEA is funding a USGBC Task Group to support revisions for treatment of district energy in LEED Version 4. This interactive session includes an update on "cracking the code" for district energy/LEED and features discussion on emerging deployment strategies amidst a shifting regulatroy environment.

Invited participants included:

  • Chris Baber, Neighborhood Energy Manager, City of Vancouver
  • Tim Griffin, Principal, RMF Engineering
  • Gerard MacDonald, Principal, Reshape Strategies
  • Mark Spurr, Principal, FVB Energy

Accelerating District Energy Deployment in Canada: An International Roundtable

With a new majority government in Ottawa pledging investment in infrastructure, ho can the Canadian industry leverage international success to stimulate stronger policies supporting investment in district energy? IEA DHC/CHP executives engage along with Canadian thought leaders on "how to" transfer effective policies, technologie and strategies from Europe and elsewhere to accelerate federal, provincial and local investment in district energy across Canada.

Invited participants included:

  • Bruce Ander, President and CEO, Markham District Energy
  • Ken Church, Team Leader, Communities, Natural Resources Canada
  • Richard Damecour, President, FVB Energy
  • Brent Gilmour, Executive Director, QUEST
  • Lars Gullev, Managing Director, VEKS
  • Heiko Huther, Director R&D, AGFW
  • Robin Wiltshire, Technical Director, Building Research Establishment
