Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (APS) in Massachusetts

06-19-2017 10:11

Summary

The Massachusetts Alternative Energy Portfolio Standard (APS) is a mandatory market-based program which requires that a fraction of the electricity sold by the state's Retail Electricity Suppliers be generated using Alternative Energy technologies. Among the APS eligible technologies in Massachusetts, natural gas-fired cogeneration is predominant and represents more than 99% of the 2010 APS-certified generation.

The APS program was created for alternative energy sources that may not fall in to the Renewable Portfolio Standard. Its goal is to encourage commercial development of these technologies and consequently to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
